Building The Career Reinvention Model
Being alongside men’s midlife career reinvention journeys over the past 6 years, I realised that organically, all men go through a similar career reinvention process. They have similar problems, they get stuck in the same places, they use similar language, they like metaphors (especially sporting, construction and mechanical ones), they like simplicity, and they generally take the same steps through a career reinvention. Believe it or not, we might think we’re different, but us blokes are surprisingly similar cats. So, I extracted this process, including the coaching “tools” and techniques that were useful. It translated into a 5 phase model.
The Model is a Road Map
I’ve found men want to know where they are going. So the intention of the model is to: 1) Provide the practical steps, language, tools, way points and “road map” for career reinvention; 2) Layout the journey so they know what to expect in advance which reduces the uncertainty of change; and 3) To normalise the reinvention process and demonstrate to men that midlife career reinvention is not scary, unknown or not doable, there is a process to it, other men have done it and it works.
How To Use The Model
The model gives you an understanding of the career reinvention process you will go through. It acts as a “baseline” or “anchor” to keep you “on track.” During reinvention, if you want to know what step to take next, just return to the model for direction.
But the model is only a ‘general’ approach to career reinvention. Its not a “cookie-cutter” or “one-size-fits-all” approach. You are unique. So, I adapt and tailor the model, and draw on other coaching tools and techniques outside the model to fit you and your specific individual circumstances.
